Playing College Soccer: Part 3 How to Email College Coaches

Published by NBTS on

Reaching out to a college coach with an introductory email can be a great way to show your interest in their program. You’ll need to make your email clear and personal. Coaches receive tons of emails from potential recruits!

Writing an introductory email to college coaches becomes easier when you break it down into three main parts: introduction, body, and next steps

Introduction: Keep it brief, friendly, and professional. Mention the coach’s name and include key details like your high school, location, graduation year, and sports position/event.

Body: Highlight what sets you apart – grades, skills, stats, and any noteworthy extracurricular activities. Add a personal touch by discussing why you’re interested in the school and program.

Next Steps: Set the stage for future communications. “I’ll be attending your ID camp”, “I am visiting your camps next month”, “I am playing at this showcase…”, “I’d love to set up a call”

Always include your highlight video and resume in the email—this is the most important part. Coaches need to see your skills and achievements to get a good sense of your abilities. Don’t forget to attach or link any videos, schedules, or documents you mention.

Here are some quick tips for writing an email to a college coach:

  1. Make it Personal: Coaches are more interested in players who genuinely want to attend their school.
  2. Include Notable Stats: Highlight your athletic and academic achievements to stand out.
  3. Proofread: Avoid copy/pasting to every coach; check for font, text color, spelling, and grammar errors before sending.
  4. Don’t Write an Essay: Keep the email short, concise, and direct.

Remember that the goal of your email to college coaches is to initiate communication and begin building a relationship. Every coach has unique preferences and priorities, but these tips should set you on the right path. In our next article, we’ll discuss optimizing your highlight tape for maximum impact.
