Playing College Soccer: Part 2 Making a List

Published by NBTS on

When starting on your college recruitment journey, one of the first steps is to compile a list of schools that resonate with you. Prospective student-athletes must conduct extensive research to understand each school thoroughly, including its soccer program, academic offerings, campus culture, and values.

Take a holistic approach. Consider factors such as the school’s location, student population, available majors, and overall campus culture. Remember, your time on the field is limited to about 2 hours a day; what about the other 22 hours? Picture your life beyond soccer at each potential school.

It is important to note: Avoid sending mass emails to every college contact, as this not only wastes your time but also the coaches’ time. College coaches are looking for players who are genuinely interested in their school and program.

Begin with a comprehensive list and adjust it as you gather insights. Creating your target list isn’t solely about recruitment; it’s about discovering the ideal match for your academic, athletic, and personal development.

Now, about the numbers. There’s no magic number for how many schools should be on your list, but categorizing them can streamline the process:

Safety Schools: These institutions offer a high chance of acceptance based on your academic and athletic background. They may not be top picks but should be comfortable options for a four-year journey.

Target Schools: These are your top picks academically and athletically, where you believe you can contribute significantly on and off the field.

Reach Schools: These are dream schools slightly out of reach but worth aiming for, often including Division I powerhouses and academically rigorous colleges. It’s a long shot but worth considering.

Visiting schools in person provides invaluable insights into campus life. This firsthand experience allows you to explore the campus and gain insights into what you like and dislike about different colleges, helping you identify your priorities in a school.

Before visiting a campus, reach out to the coaching staff to schedule a meeting if possible. In our upcoming article, we’ll discuss effective communication strategies with coaches. Stay tuned for more valuable insights!
